Repository for laws, regulations, rules dealing with gender issues and reform around the world
One of the key objectives of the Women In Law (WiL) Foundation, in collaboration with Adhyatmik Foundation is to gather together and make easily available and accessible laws, regulations and rules dealing with gender issues – especially in the interests of reform for women – in different jurisdictions in connection with access to justice and relevant legislation from around the world. This website (including www.womeninlaw.com) has been refreshed to honour Women’s International Day and to launch positive initiatives. The Foundation page aims to disseminate information and be available as a resource to lawyers.

Awareness Raising, Advertisement and Sponsorship Initiatives
As was demonstrated initially in the FES Workshop Roundtable held in Delhi in 2007 WiL can be introduced as a very positive legal sector initiative . Results of such discussions can be posted on the website and clients and corporate bodies should be made aware of WiL through member contact. WiL can provide unique insight into conditions in differing jurisdictions to attract support for change.
The conditions in the SAARC Region are very different from those in the USA and Europe: as with other developing countries the prime factor in India is the dense poverty line. Since the money generated from advertising or sponsorship can be used for conference debating and awareness raising events WiL foundation intends to attract ongoing advertising revenues.
The main targets would be corporate players in sectors with international interests and high standards of corporate governance that need to be taken seriously, such as utilities and banks.
It is pertinent to note that Sponsorships can be generated through conferences and seminars. This is useful as such events also lead to awareness in society generally about WiL. They are a well known and highly regarded method to disseminate information among key sectors.
One key theme for projects and events is the status of female lawyers as well as the potential for access to the profession and female leadership within the profession, in India along with a focus on substantive legal issues such as the domestic violence legislation or the Hindu Succession Amendment Act. Both affect women and in both cases practical implementation will be the main problem. WiL International and WiL foundation seek to integrate the issue of promotion of female lawyers and how they can support the implementation of gender legislation in ongoing conferences.
Another initiative is to encourage local student submissions in a WiL International newsletter. This will enable exposure to a wide-range of international practitioners and will also achieve possibilities for publication for students who may have limited resources. Sponsorship by more experienced professionals could also enable students to travel for research or to attend conferences or events and to assist with NGO volunteering programmes. A writing contest could evolve through WiL Foundation efforts to develop and offer a publication forum for students, coupled with academic support under a CSR program.
International sponsorship would also be attracted for an annual hard copy version of the newsletter – with regional variations – and an award for authors at a prestigious conference event.
Links with sponsorship agencies are being developed, such as SAARC LAW, the British Council, DFID, the EU, CII, FNICCI the regional research institute TERI and relevant NGOs. With the development of sponsorship and marketing revenues subscriptions can be subsidised for regional subscribers, thereby attracting a vibrant readership for the WiL Foundation newsletter and enabling related services to flourish.

Supporting the WiL Foundation Initiative
Members of the legal profession - and their friends - are encouraged to:
- develop projects with WiL – including practical research with recommendations for change – that demonstrate CSR that can be supported by global law firms
- provide, in English, copies of the world’s relevant laws relating to women’s rights and gender discrimination and reform, together with a standardised summary of these · to enable a directory of all relevant authorities and all legal firms interested in laws and related regulations and procedures
- offer comprehensive linkages to sites of national and international agencies and professional associations, including sites maintained by governmental and non-governmental instructions as well as those maintained by other professionals
- support a forum for the exchange of information between lawyers impacted by regulations and serve as an electronic meeting place for the discussion of current issues relating to all aspects of gender discrimination, including specific legislation, especially those with an international dimension
- build awareness of the problems or difficulties encountered in preventing and detecting legal breaches through a best practice exchange programme to assist practitioners in comparative jurisdictions; and
- be a tool for social, legal and economic change through WiL Chapters in key jurisdictions.
